La Catedral Metropolitana de la ciudad de México se comenzó a contruir en 1573, concluyéndose el interior del edificio en 1667, y el exterior en 1813. Debido al prolongado tiempo de su construcción, poco menos de 250 años, la catedral contiene varios de los estilos predominantes en la época, incluyendo el gótico, barroco, churrigueresco, y neoclásico.
El suelo ubicado debajo de la catedral es una arcilla altamente compresible. En el inicio, el edificio fue construido sobre cerca de 20 mil pilotes de sólida madera a gran profundidad. Sin embargo, el edificio de la catedral, junto con el resto de la ciudad, continúa hundiéndose como resultado de la sobreexplotación del agua subterránea. En 1990, se dio inicio a los trabajos de estabilización del edificio, reforzando la cimentación con ejes de hormigón, trabajos que concluyeron en 1998. Esto no detiene el hundimiento, pero asegura que éste sea uniforme. El enorme péndulo que cuelga de la cúpula central es testigo inmutable del movimiento del edificio, el cual continúa a la fecha su asentamiento hacia el futuro. The soil located under the cathedral is a highly compressible clay. In the beginning, the building was built on about 20 thousand piles of solid wood at great depth. However, the cathedral building, along with the rest of the city, continues to sink as a result of overexploitation of groundwater. In 1990, work began to stabilize the building, reinforcing the foundation with concrete beams, work that was completed in 1998. This does not stop the sinking, but it ensures that it is spatially uniform. The huge pendulum that hangs from the central dome is an inmutable witness to the movement of the building, which continues its settling to this date. |
