REVIEW OF PDF FOR VICENTE LOPES By Victor M. Ponce Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering San Diego State University November 10, 2005 I have reviewed the professional accomplishments of Dr. Vicente Lopes, as detailed in his Personnel Data File furnoished to me by Texas State University's College of Science. Dr. Lopes is applying for a promotion to Professor in the department of Biology, Texas State University. I recommend that Dr. Vicente Lopes be promoted to the rank of full professor. I base my recommendation on the following detailed review of his professional accomplishments. Dr. Lopes has been at the associate professor rank since 1995, first at the University of Arizona, and more recently, since January 2005, at Texas State University. His area of expertise is watershed hydrology, with specific emphasis in the modeling of water and sediment yield. Since promotion to associate professor, Dr. Lopes has written 15 refereed journal articles, 14 of which have been published in recognized professional journals; the last is currently in press. In the same span of time, he has written 16 proceedings papers, as well as other contributions to the engineering and scientific literature. Examination of his writings reveals that he is very knowledgeable in the mathematical modeling of water and sediment, particularly as it refers to the usage of new tools for distributed modeling in a DEM context. His papers on catchment-scale erosion modeling have been well received by the modeling community. His recent (2004) paper on the effect of watershed representation on runoff and sediment yield points to some pitfalls in discretization practices which should call the attention of watershed researchers. Dr. Lopes' enjoys his teaching, and seems to be doing a good job, judging by the teaching awards that he has to his credit. He is particularly adept as a dissertation research advisor, having directed six (6) doctoral dissertations during his tenure at the University of Arizona, five (5) of them while at the rank fo associate professor. To this record, he adds twelve (12) M.S. thesis, also at the University of Arizona, five (5) while at the rank of associate professor. Dr. Lopes has been very active, and very effective, at securing grants and contracts for the performance of sponsored research. Some of these grants have been competitive at the national and international level. Dr. Lopes' service to the departments in which he has worked, the university, and the community are rated as outstanding, judging by the norm at comparable institutions.
